Win over New Jersey caps 2nd straight perfect year

GLASSBORO, N.J. -- Middlebury won its second straight NCAA Division III women's lacrosse championship, and its fourth overall, defeating the College of New Jersey, 12-6, yesterday at Rowan College.

The Panthers (18-0) also completed their second consecutive perfect season and have won 35 straight games.

The Lions (17-1) failed in their quest for an undefeated season.

Carin Heller opened the game with two goals to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Middlebury's Meg Bonney scored two goals, then Krisitin Hanley took a feed from Katie Simpson and beat Lions goalie Jen Munday to break the tie.

Just 42 seconds later, Julia Bergofsky scored to increase Middlebury's lead to 4-2.

Later in the first half, Hanley slipped past two defenders and fired a low shot past Munday to make the score 6-3.

Middlebury put the game away in the second half, getting four straight goals to take a 10-3 advantage.
