Agency announces security positions are open at BWI

The Transportation Security Administration is accepting applications for security screening positions at Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

With the federal government assuming responsibility for screening passengers, a number of positions are available. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Security screeners at BWI and the nation's airports will check baggage, cargo and passengers. Responsibilities will include preventing dangerous objects in baggage, cargo or on passengers from being transported onto aircraft. Screeners will be trained in the use of electronic detection and imaging equipment.

Information and online application: Applicants who cannot complete the application online should call 877-631- 5627.

Skywalk construction to begin today at BWI

Beginning today, travelers entering BWI Airport from the parking garage are encouraged to use the center pedestrian bridges on the upper level of Pier C and the International Pier or the lower level tunnel on the first floor of the parking garage.

The Pier B pedestrian bridge has been removed, and the bridge at Pier D will be removed within two weeks. During its removal, the terminal doorway at Pier D on the upper level will be closed in front of the bridge. The terminal doorway at the lower level of Pier D leading from the crosswalk also will be closed. Passengers can enter the terminal through nearby doors at Pier D. Other entrances will remain open.

These changes are necessary as skywalk construction begins from Level Six of the garage to the terminal. When completed, travelers will be able to cross over the airport roadway, descending into the terminal on new elevators and escalators.

Southwest to offer nonstop service to L.A.

Beginning Sept. 15, Southwest Airlines will offer nonstop coast-to-coast service with two daily flights between BWI Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. It is the airline's first nonstop cross-country flight.

Southwest's introductory fare of $99 each way between BWI and Los Angeles (available through Sept. 15) will be valid for travel between Sept. 15 and Oct. 25. Restrictions will apply.

Seating may not be available on some flights that operate during peak or holiday travel times. Fares are subject to change until ticketed, and any change in itinerary could result in an increased fare. The offer applies only to this new flight.

Southwest Airlines, BWI Airport's largest air carrier, employs more than 2,000 people at BWI. Southwest offers nearly 138 flights each day out of BWI.
