Owens names panel to study rising cost of school construction

County Executive Janet S. Owens has appointed five businessmen to serve on a commission that will investigate the rapidly rising costs of school construction.

The commission will be lead by Ed St. John, president of MIE Industries of Owings Mills. The other members are Thomas Baldwin, the former president and chief executive officer of Reliable Contracting Co. of Millersville; Walter J. Hall, former president and chief executive officer of Fair Lanes Inc. and a trustee of Anne Arundel Community College; Samuel Heffner, a principal at the general contractor Heffner & Weber in Linthicum; and Robert Strott, senior vice president of Constellation Real Estate Inc. in Odenton.

Owens asked that the commission finish its work by the end of the year and offer suggestions of ways to improve the construction process.

Anne Arundel offers discount Orioles tickets

Baseball fans who live or work in Anne Arundel County may buy discounted tickets for the May 30 game between the Orioles and the Seattle Mariners at Camden Yards.

County public works wins anti-pollution honor

The Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies will present the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works with an award for anti-pollution efforts at its Broadwater Water Reclamation Facility at a ceremony tomorrow in Washington.

Michael Bonk, the county's director of utility operations, will accept the award for the county. Anne Arundel's Broadwater plant is one of 12 facilities nationwide to receive the sewerage agencies' Platinum Award, given to counties that have complied with national standards for pollutant discharge for five years in a row.

Fund-raiser to benefit delegate's re-election bid

A re-election campaign fund-raiser for Del. David G. Boschert, a Republican from Crownsville, will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 15 at the home of Carolyn Middleton in Davidsonville.

Snacks and beverages will be served at the event. The Friends of David Boschert will sponsor the event. Music will be provided by harpist Jan Holland and pianist Larry Byrne. The cost is $35. Reservations are due by June 6. Information: 410-923- 6474.
