Senior Kristin Gormus pitched a complete-game two-hitter, out-dueling senior Katie Zitnay to lead the host Howard softball team to a 1-0 victory over fifth-ranked Atholton yesterday in a Class 2A West semifinal.

The Lions (15-5) advance to tomorrow's regional final. Atholton, which had played in the past two 2A state finals, finished 19-3.

Howard, which mustered just two hits off Zitnay, a three-time All-Metro selection, scored its only run in the fifth inning.

Jessie Medairy led off with a single, then advanced to third on a sacrifice and a throwing error. She scored on a groundout by Melissa Javier.

Gormus struck out five, and was in complete control until the sixth inning, when the Raiders got a leadoff double. But Gormus got a flyout and struck out the next two batters.
