Arundel's 13-9 victory is Walter's 500th

Defending Class 4A state champion Arundel outlasted Broadneck, 13-9, yesterday to win an East Region quarterfinal and make Bernie Walter the first public school baseball coach to win 500 games.

Walter, who is 500-137 (.785) in 29 seasons, leads his No. 4 Wildcats (16-6) into today's 4 p.m. region semifinal at home against No. 10 Westminster (16-4). Walter and Arundel also own the Maryland record for state titles (nine).

Jesse Trout went 3-for-3 with four RBIs including a bases-loaded triple in an eight-run third as the Wildcats eliminated the visiting and No. 9 Bruins (14-7).
