BOYS

Phil DeRosier

Long Reach, track and field

There's no telling what the senior could have accomplished if he had joined the Lightning earlier.

In just his first season, DeRosier captured three gold medals at the Howard County championships. He won the 100 meters in 10.6 seconds, the 200 in 21.7 and the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 2 inches. His times in the 100 and 200 would have beaten last year's winning times in the Class 3A state championship meet.

DeRosier, who also anchored the second-place 800 relay squad, was awarded the meet's coveted Ironman Award for his performance. DeRosier was selected to the All-Howard County indoor track team this past winter for, in part, winning the 3A-2A West Regional and county titles in the 55.

GIRLS

Katie Chrest

Maryvale, lacrosse

The Duke-bound senior midfielder provided the spark that fueled No. 2 Maryvale's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship.

Last week, Chrest accumulated 11 goals and four assists in three tournament games. In the 10-9 quarterfinal win over No. 14-ranked St. Paul's, she scored five goals, including two in the final 1:15, to ensure a Lions victory. She had two goals and one assist in the semifinal 12-4 win over No. 10 Roland Park. In Saturday night's finale, Chrest scored four goals and dished out three assists in the 9-6 championship victory over No. 8 Bryn Mawr.

Chrest, who also played basketball for the Lions, completed the season with 47 goals and 24 assists.
