School board to set spending priorities for 2003 budget

The Howard County Board of Education will meet to set category totals for the fiscal year 2003 budget at 9 a.m. tomorrow in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The board will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. May 23. The afternoon session, and an evening session that begins at 7:30 p.m., will begin with a public forum, during which members of the public may address the board on any topic. Those who plan to speak are asked to sign up in advance.

Special education program needs summer volunteers

Volunteers are needed for the Consolidated Special Education Summer School Program, to be held from 7:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. weekdays, June 26 through Aug. 1, at Cedar Lane School and Harper's Choice Middle School.

Volunteers must be at least 13 years old, or about to enter eighth grade. Experience is not necessary, but volunteers must be interested in working with people who have disabilities and be willing to commit to a regular schedule.

Applications are available at Howard County middle and high school guidance offices, and at Swansfield Elementary School.

Informal session set at Deep Run Elementary

The Board of Education will hold a "Coffee and Conversation" session from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday in the Deep Run Elementary School Media Center, 6925 Old Waterloo Road, Elkridge.

The meetings, which are held at schools throughout Howard County, offer parents and others an opportunity to share a cup of coffee and speak informally with board members.

Technology program schedules summer camp

The Technology Magnet Program of the Howard County public schools will offer a weeklong Technology Magnet Camp for seventh- and eighth-graders from 8 a.m. to noon June 17 to 21 at the Applications & Research Laboratory, 10920 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The fee is $75. Enrollment is limited to 125. Families must provide transportation. Registration is due by Friday.
