Manchester youth honored for volunteer work

Jamie Ridgely of Manchester has been presented with an engraved bronze medallion as a distinguished finalist in the 2002 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

She designed and maintains a Web site to help teens find and share ideas and information about community service projects.

Local honorees were reviewed by state judges, who chose two youths for state recognition and a number of finalists. Students were selected on initiative, creativity, effort, impact and personal growth.

Prudential created the awards to encourage young people to become more involved in community service.

North Carroll Middle pupil a winner in essay contest

Robert Hill, an eighth-grade pupil at North Carroll Middle School, was a winner in the Hampstead American Legion Auxiliary Essay Contest.

The theme of the contest was "Why America Is Great."

As one of the top three winners, Robert was presented a savings bond at the auxiliary's meeting this month.

Manchester Elementary plans events for pupils

Manchester Elementary School has a number of events planned for its pupils beginning tomorrow.

Second-grade pupils will participate in an Australian "flight" at 9 a.m. tomorrow. The event is in preparation for Australia Day festivities Friday.

Fifth-grade pupils will be visited throughout the day tomorrow by a guest who will discuss "Learning About Our Body System."

Magician Damian Hart will entertain the second grade at 10 a.m. Monday for the conclusion of The Sun's Reading by 9 program.

Fifth-grade pupils will participate in an author's tea for their writings this year at 2 p.m. Monday in the media center.

Betty Smith's fifth-grade class will visit the outdoor classroom at Charlotte's Quest Nature Center and the nearby creek at 1:30 p.m. May 23.

Library branch to offer story time, Internet class

North Carroll library branch, 2255 Hanover Pike, Greenmount, will offer:

"Year-round Family Story Time" for all ages (age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 10:30 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. every Wednesday and at 10 a.m. every Thursday. Stories, songs and activities will be featured.

North Carroll Book Club for adults at 6:30 p.m. May 28 to discuss The Shipping News by Annie Proulx.

"Introduction to the Internet" for adults starting to use the Internet at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Police council: Hampstead Police Advisory Council will meet at 7 p.m. today at Town Hall, 1034 S. Carroll St. The community is welcome. Issues such as traffic enforcement, staffing and crime prevention will be discussed. 410-239-7408.
