Shane Bertsch, medalist here two years ago, shot 7-under-par 65 to again lead the field at Eagle's Nest in local qualifying for the U.S. Open championship. Four others shot 68, including 2001 medalist David Hutsell, an assistant professional at Columbia Country Club who lives in Towson, and amateur David Nocar, of Severna Park.
With two (out of an original nine) places at stake, six players will return at 8 this morning to vie for the two places in the Woodmont Country Club sectional, June 3, and four alternate spots.
