County commission hopefuls to speak to Republican group

South Carroll Republican Club will meet at 7 p.m. today at Ledo Pizza in Eldersburg.

Participants should arrive early and order food between 6:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Guests will be Carroll County commissioner candidates, including Perry Jones, Dean Minnich and Henry Griese IV.

Ledo is at 577 Johnsville Road.

Volunteer Fair offered for students at library

Eldersburg library branch will hold a Volunteer Fair at 7 p.m. today for middle school and high school students looking for community service opportunities for the summer.

A brief presentation will be made, then students can meet with representatives from organizations to see what opportunities are available.

Organizations that will attend include the Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Ascension Episcopal Church Outreach, the library, Copper Ridge Nursing Home, Meals on Wheels, Pets on Wheels and Sykesville Schoolhouse.

Registration is Sunday for Raiders football

Sykesville Raiders Football and Cheerleading will hold open registration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Freedom Optimist Hall in Eldersburg.

Freedom-area children ages 5 to 14 can register for programs.

The Optimist hall is next to Pizza Hut on Route 32 north.

Air Force band to play at Liberty High jazz event

Liberty High School will sponsor the Carroll County Jazz Showcase at 7 p.m. May 21 in the school auditorium in Eldersburg.

Jazz bands from Liberty and Westminster High will perform. Featured guests will be the Airmen of Note, the Air Force jazz band.

The concert is free. The school is at 5855 Bartholow Road.

Fitness center announces classes in Pilates, yoga

Freedom Area Recreation Council's Health & Fitness Center at Carrolltown Center has added the following new classes.

Pilates Mix: A workout designed to strengthen the abdomen, lower back and buttocks. Class also includes a yoga-inspired "mind and body" segment. 6 p.m. Mondays at HFCC studio; 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Carrolltown Center Community Room.

Yoga (beginning): Good for those new to yoga and those who have been practicing for a while. 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at HFCC studio; 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Carrolltown Center Community Room.

Belly Dance: Belly dancing as exercise. 4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 8 p.m. Wednesday. Belly dance classes begin May 28.

Kids Fit: This class is appropriate for ages 4 and older and for all fitness levels with Top 40 music workouts. The program starts at 12:30 p.m. June 18 for eight weeks.

Unless noted, classes begin the week of May 20.

Church seeks volunteers for strawberry festival

Messiah Lutheran Church is seeking vendors for its annual strawberry festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 1 at the Sykesville-Freedom firemen's carnival grounds.

Crafts people, antiques dealers and flea market vendors are needed.

Spaces are $30 for a 20-by- 20-foot area.

Linton Springs Elementary: Assistant Principal Mary Katsafanas has received the 2002 Excellence in Teacher Education Award from Towson University.

Freedom Elementary: The Diversity Garden in front of the school will be dedicated at 10 a.m. Friday (rain date 10 a.m. May 31). The garden was designed as a visual metaphor of diversity. Pupils and staff planted wildflower seeds in the garden next to the pond on the school grounds. 410-751-3525.
