Emory United Methodist Church to hold annual yard sale Saturday

Emory United Methodist Church will hold its annual yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church north of Finksburg.

Spaces may be rented for $10 each. The community is invited to participate.

Food and beverages will be sold.

The church is on Route 91 at Emory Church Road.

Deer Park church to offer contemporary concert

Deer Park United Methodist Church in Smallwood will present a concert of contemporary music at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the church sanctuary.

The band In Him will perform.

Refreshments will be served after the concert.

Church of the Ascension slates spring marketplace

The Church of the Ascension will hold a spring marketplace from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church in Westminster.

Live entertainment will be provided, and crafts, baked goods, gently used items, food, flowers and plants will be sold.

Proceeds will benefit the church building fund.

The church recently expanded, with classrooms, a social hall and kitchen for community groups that meet there.

`Evening of Music' planned at Smallwood church

Trinity Lutheran Church will present "An Evening of Music" at 7 Sunday at the church in Smallwood.

Performers will include: the children of Carroll Lutheran School; Sandi Aldridge of Bethel Assembly of God, Littlestown, Pa.; Sarah and Eric French; the Mayberry Church of God Band; Jeff Gentry of Calvary United Methodist Church, Mount Airy; and the Trinity Lutheran Church Adult and Children's Choirs.

The guest will be James Cook of Strawbridge United Methodist Church, New Windsor.

An offering will be taken to benefit Carroll Lutheran School in Westminster.

Refreshments will be shared in the social hall after the service.

Westminster teen to study graphic design at RIT

Scott Gabriel Laczkowski of Westminster has enrolled at Rochester Institute of Technology for the fall semester.

After graduating from Westminster High School in June, he plans to major in graphic design at RIT's School of Design.

RIT offers imaging, technology, fine and applied arts education to the deaf, with 240 career-oriented and professional programs.

Scott is the son of Sherry and Ronald Laczkowski of Westminster.

Westminster Elks lodge honors 36-year member

Westminster Elks Lodge 2277 recently paid tribute to Tallmadge Ballance for his outstanding dedication and service to the club for the past 36 years.

Ballance joined the Elks in June 1966 and the next year was elected Tiler, an office he has held since then.

As Tiler, he cooked fried chicken and crab cakes for the lodge, and helped when he was needed.

It is estimated he has fried more than 137,400 pieces of chicken. One Lodge member called his crab cakes the best in the state.

As part of the honor, the Lodge renamed its banquet room Tallmadge Hall.

Exalted Ruler Dennis Meloche presented Ballance with a gold watch and engraved plaque.

West Middle pupil elected to statewide council

Kevin Tervala, a seventh-grade pupil at West Middle School, has been elected second vice president of the Maryland Association of Student Councils.

He was elected at the association's state convention last month.

He presented a speech and participated in a question-and-answer period in front of about 900 students from across the state.

As second vice president, Kevin will represent middle school pupils in the state and encourage pupils to become involved in student government.

2 area teens complete training at Parris Island

Marine Corps Pvt. Brett T. Rodgers and Pfc. Michael E. Boyd recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Boyd also was promoted to his present rank.

The 2001 Westminster High School graduates completed 12 weeks of military, academic and physical fitness training.
