Library to name meeting room after librarian Lenna B. Burgess

Howard County Public Library will dedicate the meeting room at the Miller branch library in honor of Lenna Baker Burgess, one of the county's first librarians. The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Miller branch, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.

In 1941, Burgess helped create the county's first library in three rooms of a portable school building on Main Street in Ellicott City, according to library archives. Members of her family, County Executive James N. Robey and other officials will be on hand.

Genealogical society to aid in family research

Howard County Genealogical Society will offer help to people interested in researching their family history from 3 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. June 6 at the Miller Branch library in Ellicott City.

Beginning and experienced researchers can make a 45-minute appointment with an experienced genealogist. Participants will receive a guide to genealogy resources at the library.

Reports for duty: Marine Corps 1st Lt. Andrew M. Eastwick IV, a 1994 graduate of Mount Hebron High School, recently reported for duty with Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Completes training: Army Pfc. Arianna Wu, daughter of Stella Wu of Ellicott City, has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. She is a 1997 graduate of Howard High School.

Connor Thomas: To Laura and David Burnham of Ellicott City on April 29.

Enrichment fair: Patapsco Middle School, 8885 Old Frederick Road, invites the community to its annual Enrichment Fair from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow. Projects that children have been working on throughout the year will be on display. The school's band, chorus, orchestra, dance team and other groups will perform. 410-313-2848.

Grief support group: The Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging has organized a grief support group, SPRING Pretenders, that will meet from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays starting this week at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road.
