Virginia ousts Maryland from ACC softball tourney

Navy scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Lehigh, 5-3, yesterday in the Patriot League baseball tournament at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis.

Neil Brubeck went 3-for-4 for the Midshipmen, who need just one victory over the Mountain Hawks today to win the best-of-three series and clinch the automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. Pete Curnow, Craig Candeto, Brad Hager and David Woolsey got two hits apiece.

Towson 9, Old Dominion 8: Junior second baseman Tom Trela (St. Paul's) drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to cap a four-run rally, as the host Tigers (23-25-1, 9-11 league) pulled out a Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Monarchs (23-24, 5-11) for their seventh straight win.

Softball

Virginia 4, Maryland 1: Kristen Dennis retired 16 of the last 17 batters as the Cavaliers (45-21) eliminated the Terps (31-21) from the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at the Seminole Softball Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.

Salisbury 2, Western Maryland 1: Katie Mullinix (North Carroll) pitched a six-hitter to help the Sea Gulls (37-9) oust the Green Terror from the NCAA East Regional in Radnor, Pa.
