Deaths Elsewhere

May 12, 2002

David Riesman, 92, an author and sociologist whose million-selling The Lonely Crowd was quoted by everyone from teachers to Bob Dylan, died of natural causes Friday in New York. A Harvard graduate with a background in law and science, Mr. Riesman published The Lonely Crowd in 1950 with the assistance of Nathan Glazer and Reuel Denney. It said society was evolving from "inner-directed" to "other-directed," from people influenced by parents and other adult authority figures to people dependent on peer approval.
