May 12, 2002

John William Mazz, 91, an accountant and veteran who served in the Army during World War II, died Tuesday of heart failure at Renaissance Gardens at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville.

Born in Baltimore, Mr. Mazz graduated from Polytechnic Institute in 1929.

He worked as an accountant for a real estate company and as a bookkeeper for an auto club.

Mr. Mazz was a member of the American Legion Post 154 for 53 years. He also was a 32nd degree Mason, said his cousin, Margaret West of Mechanicsburg, Ohio.

He lived on The Alameda for many years. After his wife of 39 years, the former Marie E. Shellenberger, died in 1985, he moved to Charlestown.

Nearly 20 years ago, Mr. Mazz began painting with oils. He created murals and other designs on buildings, said his brother, Michael Mazz of Catonsville.

Services were held Friday.

Mr. Mazz has no other survivors.
