College to announce its new name with festivities and fireworks tonight

May 10, 2002

Western Maryland College has scheduled a fireworks display for 10:30 p.m. today and other festivities to celebrate the announcement of its new name, which will be unveiled at 8:30 p.m., capping months of speculation.

Officials have invited faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the college to the name presentation in Memorial Plaza. The new name will be posted on the College's Web site at and on a toll-free recording about 9 p.m. The change is effective July 1.

The fireworks are to be launched from the campus hilltop near the college golf course.

"The fireworks are starting much later than our previous displays, and we want to alert the community that we will be making just a little noise up here," said Joyce Muller, associate vice president of communications and marketing. "Of course, we hope our neighbors will understand that this is a very historic event and we invite them to step outside to enjoy the show and celebrate with us."
