The C. Milton Wright Mustangs took the lead in both the boys and girls scoring in the first day of the Harford County Track and Field Championships yesterday in Bel Air.

With one-third of the 36 events completed, the Mustangs lead the boys scoring with 39 points and are tied with Fallston atop the girls standings at 36.

The reigning team champions won both the boys and girls 3,200-meter relays with outstanding performances. The boys team finished in 8 minutes, 4 seconds, just three seconds off its own county record. The girls won in a school-record 9:35, a mark second only to Fallston's county-record 9:28.1.

Lauren Betzing gave John Carroll a boost by upsetting Wright's defending champ, Morgan Little, by two seconds in the 3,200 with a career-best 11:34.

Edgewood's Lauren Dunn repeated in the triple jump and Bel Air's Laura Knight in the pole vault.

Returning champions also did well in the boys events. Wright's Pat Bailey won the 3,200 in 9:45, and Joppatowne's Phil Tillman, the 2001 discus champion, won the shot put (52 feet, 4 1/4 inches).
