A Howard County bicyclist was struck by a car about 6 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 1 and Route 175, county police say.

Alvero Rodrigo Pimetel-Herrer, 28, of the 7700 block of Washington Blvd. in Elkridge was listed in critical condition yesterday afternoon at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was taken after the accident.

Investigators said Pimetel-Herrer was riding his blue Gary Fisher Marlin bicycle south on U.S. 1 and failed to yield to traffic as he crossed Route 175 at a crosswalk.

The signal for eastbound Route 175 was green at the time, police said.

The driver of a 2002 Saturn SL1, Patricia L. Cloud, 55, of Columbia, was in the middle lane of eastbound Route 175 and was unable to avoid the cyclist, police said. Cloud was not injured in the collision, police said.
