Both exits from Beltway closed today, tomorrow

Repair work on a broken water main and damaged roadway is expected to cause traffic disruptions today and tomorrow at one of Baltimore County's most heavily traveled intersections - Liberty Road and Washington Avenue - and could slow motorists on the nearby Baltimore Beltway.

Kurt L. Kocher, spokesman for Baltimore's Department of Public Works, said a break in a 12-inch main yesterday afternoon under the intersection caused a section of the road to collapse.

Only six water customers were without service, Kocher said, but the break - reported during the evening rush hour - seriously affected traffic on Liberty Road and on the Beltway exits to westbound Liberty.

Kocher said crews responded quickly and shut off the water. He was unable to say how much water was lost.

David Buck, spokesman for the State Highway Administration, said exits on both Beltway loops to westbound Liberty Road will be closed and traffic detoured by county police while repairs are under way.

Motorists on the outer loop will be directed to the next exit at Security Boulevard, then to Rolling Road and Liberty Road.

Inner loop traffic will be detoured to Interstate 795, Owings Mills Boulevard, Painters Mill Road and Liberty Road.

Liberty Road will remain open, with traffic reduced to one lane in each direction at the intersection.
