Winfield Cub Scouts to appear on television for fund raising

Cub Scout Troop 733 of Winfield will be featured on the national Public Broadcasting Service series ZOOM at 5:30 p.m. today on Maryland Public Television.

Cub Scout Troop 733 decided to meet the President's Challenge by collecting dollar bills to send to needy children in Afghanistan.

The troop collected $50.

St. Paul's church plans community yard sale

St. Paul's Episcopal Church will hold a community yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 1 at the church near Lisbon.

Spaces are free, but offerings will be accepted. Space is limited to about 50 vendors.

The church is at 16457 Old Frederick Road.

Mount Airy library slates talk by Holocaust survivor

The Mount Airy library branch, 705 Ridge Ave., will offer:

Storytelling From the Hill for all ages (children age 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult) at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Graduate students from Western Maryland College, trained in the art of storytelling, will present a concert with a variety of stories.

Author Appearance for adults - Leo Bretholz at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A Holocaust survivor and author of Leap Into Darkness: Seven Years on the Run in Wartime Europe, Bretholz will describe escapes that kept him one step ahead of the Nazis in World War II.

Year-round Story Time for all ages (age 3 and younger with an adult) at 11 a.m. today, Crash, Rattle and Bang; and at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday, Wild Animals.

Teen Book Buddies for all ages at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Navy's Marick completes advanced electronic course

Navy Seaman Apprentice John A. Marick recently graduated from the Electronic Warfare Technician Advanced Electronic Course at Naval Technical Training Center Corry Station, Pensacola, Fla.

During the two-month course, he received advanced technical training on the performance and characteristics of electronic systems used to detect, analyze and identify electronic emissions.

As an electronics warfare technician, Marick operates and maintains equipment used in navigation, target detection and location, and prevention of electronic spying by enemies.

Marick is the son of Davena and John Marick of Berrett. He is a 2001 graduate of South Carroll High School. He joined the Navy in July.

Navy's Pucino returns from 6-month deployment

Navy Seaman David J. Pucino, a 2000 graduate of Linganore High School in Mount Airy, recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf while assigned to the guided missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf, whose home port is Norfolk, Va.

Pucino was one of more than 10,000 Atlantic Fleet sailors and Marines aboard the ships of the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Battle Group and the USS Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, which participated in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Legion bingo: American Legion Gold Star Post 191 of Mount Airy will hold daytime bingo every Wednesday and evening games every Thursday at its hall at 801 Prospect Road.
