Royals update

The Orioles swept three games from Kansas City last weekend, culminating with a 13-0 pasting on Sunday. That seemed to be the final straw for manager Tony Muser, who was fired early Tuesday. The Royals named bullpen coach John Mizerock interim manager, and at age 41, Mizerock is the youngest skipper in the big leagues. In nine seasons as a minor-league manager, Mizerock went 646-554. But he has lost his first two big-league games, 9-3 and 7-6, to Detroit to take over last place in the American League Central at 8-17. Byrd won his first four starts but gave up five runs in seven innings in Saturday's 9-4 loss to the Orioles. Tony Batista and Melvin Mora homered off Byrd, and Ponson earned his first victory since June 28. The Orioles outscored the Royals 32-9, but they missed Suppan, who threw a two-hitter in Monday's 4-0 victory over Detroit.
