Public schools' service awards reception today

The Howard County public school system will hold its Annual Service Awards reception from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia. Employees with 15 or more years of service will be recognized.

Another reception, "In Honor of Excellence," will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. May 14 at Jim Rouse Theatre for the Performing Arts at Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Road, Columbia. School system employees who have been named or nominated for a variety of awards will be honored. Both evenings honor principals, teachers, instructional assistants and other employees.

Summer classes slated for senior adults

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, in conjunction with Howard Community College and the Howard County Office on Aging, will sponsor a Senior Adult Summer Institute from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 20-23 at Howard Community College in Columbia.

Classes in art appreciation, history, music and philosophy will be offered. Lunch will be on campus. The cost is $8 a day for those ages 60 and older; $10 a day for ages 18 to 59. Four days of classes cost $25 for ages 60 and older; $35 for ages 18 to 59.

Camp Invention sessions planned for July, August

Three Howard County schools and the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will offer Camp Invention, a national summer day camp program in creativity for children entering second through sixth grades.

The camp will be offered at Lime Kiln Middle School from July 8 to 12; Jeffers Hill Elementary School from July 15 to 19; and Ellicott Mills Middle School from July 29 to Aug. 2. The cost is $199, including snacks and a T-shirt. Registration is limited to 110 children.

Homeschool Field Day today at Columbia church

The Columbia Homeschool Community will hold a Homeschool Field Day at 9 a.m. today at Christ Episcopal Church, 6800 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia.

County Police Foundation to award 2 scholarships

The Howard County Police Foundation is sponsoring its first scholarship awards for graduating Howard County high school seniors. One $500 scholarship will be given to the son or daughter of a Police Department employee; another will be awarded to a Howard County senior.

Students who fulfill certain academic and extracurricular requirements are encouraged to apply.

Applications must be received by noon Friday.
