Alan Wu stands out for music

The student: Alan Wu, 14

School: River Hill High

Special achievement: A viola player, Alan was selected to play with the Junior All State Orchestra.

Music as an international language: Originally from Taiwan, Alan spoke no English before coming to the United States two years ago. He said music has helped him fit in. "Because I couldn't speak English, I felt sad," he said. "In orchestra, you can practice the music and make new friends."

Favorite composer: Alan said he prefers Bach because "Bach's music is easy to play, and it sounds good."

Other interests: When he is not practicing the viola, Alan enjoys video games, singing and cross-country running.
