Having brunch at places sure to please Mom

You know Mom doesn't want to cook or clean on Mother's Day. Now you can go with convention and treat her to breakfast in bed. But if you are the kind of cook who burns the toast and spills the coffee, maybe a better plan is to take her out for a leisurely Sunday brunch.

Restaurants in the Baltimore area are offering Mother's Day menus for nearly every taste and budget. If your Mom is the blue-jeans-and-sneakers type, you can have casual pancakes and sausage for as little as $4 a plate. Or dress up and go all-out for a champagne-and-seafood buffet. You also can indulge Mom with Bloody Marys and decadent dessert bars.

"We find it very important to show Mom how important and how much she is appreciated, and there is no better way then to have the family together to celebrate," says Becky Kernan, catering manager of the Elkridge Furnace Inn.

Here is a list of 30 fine places to take Mom on her day. But call early. Although Mother's Day is still more than a week away, some of the most popular restaurants are already getting booked.

Alexandra's Fine Dining Restaurant, 2700 Turf Valley Road, Ellicott City, 410-465-1500. Buffet including salads, omelets made to order, hickory-smoked bacon, country sausage, chicken champignon, fresh vegetables, carving of prime rib and pork, breads, New York cheesecake and other desserts. Noon to 5 p.m. $29.95 a person. Reservations required.

Atlantic, 2400 Boston St., 410-675-4565. Menu featuring seasonal items and entrees, including filet mignon of tuna, grilled spring lamb, fresh spring asparagus and more. Eggs Atlantic (eggs Benedict with crab) will also be served. Warm chocolate tarte, handmade chocolate truffles and other items for dessert. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. $6 to $10 for breakfast items, $16 to $22 for dinner entrees. Reservations recommended

Bistro 300, Hyatt Regency Hotel, 300 Light St., 410-528-1234. Champagne brunch with chilled seafood station with smoked fish, shellfish, cold shrimp, carved meats, roast beef and ham, an omelet station, cold-salad station with selections of pasta salad, shrimp salad and variety of greens, several hot entrees with hot starches such as rice and potatoes. Desserts include mini pastries, cakes. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. $27.95 for adults, $24.95 for seniors, $14.95 for children. Reservations required

Cafe Hon, 1002 W. 36th St., 410-243-1230. Spinach omelet, two pancakes, sausage, eggs, blueberry pancakes, vegetarian casserole. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. $7.99 a person. Reservations required for parties of six or more.

The Cheesecake Factory, 201 E. Pratt St., 410-234-3990. Serving regular Sunday brunch of French toast, eggs, omelets. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prices will range from $7 to $23.95.

Ethel & Ramone's, 1615 Sulgrave Ave., 410-664-2971. Frittata bar omelets, giant pancakes with berry syrup drizzled on top with a pecan crust, crunchy French toast with chocolate-bourbon sauce, lobster, shrimp and lamb. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. $5.95 to $12. Reservations recommended.

Gertude's at the BMA, 10 Art Museum Drive, 410-889-3399. Regular a la carte brunch, including a spring frittata with goat cheese, giant blueberry pancakes, omelets, eggs Benedict with lightly fried oysters on top of a grilled tomato. 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prices range from $4.50 to $18. Reservations required.

Grille & Pub at Mountain Branch, 1827 Mountain Road, Fallston, 410-836-9600. Extensive brunch of eggs Benedict, waffles, flavored eggs, muffins, stewed tomatoes, chicken dish, smoked salmon platter, home-fry potatoes, two meats for carving, five salads, vegetable soup and mixed desserts. 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. $20.95 for adults, $10.95 for children. Reservations required.

Harbor Court, 550 Light St., 410-234-0550, Ext. 3549. Wide Hall Ballroom: grand buffet with everything from waffle stations to seafood stations. Complimentary champagne. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. $47 for adults; $20 for children ages 6-12, and free for ages 5 and under. Reservations required.

Harryman House, 340 Main St., Reisterstown, 410-833-8850. Cinnamon French toast, eggs Benedict, blueberry pancakes and several lunch items. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prices range from $10 to $20. Reservations recommended.

Hull Street Blues Cafe, 1222 Hull St., 410-727-7476. Full buffet including home fries, fish, pasta, fresh fruit, sausage and fresh desserts. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. $12.95 a person. Reservations are highly recommended.

Jesse Wong's Asean Bistro, 8775 Centre Park Drive, Columbia, 410-772-5300. Buffet including appetizers, shrimp, pork, fried rice, noodle dish and fish. Dessert bar and champagne. Served from noon to 2:30 p.m. $15.95. Reservations required.

Joey Chiu's Greenspring Inn, 10801 Falls Road, Brooklandville, 410-823-1125. Chinese and American dishes. Waffle station, sausage, potato pancakes, omelet station, pasta and a mixed vegetable dish. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. $25 per person. Reservations recommended.
