Howard County police have charged two Laurel teen-age boys with assault in a knife attack on an Atholton High School student Friday afternoon.

The youths, ages 16 and 17, were accused of attacking the student near his home in the 9000 block of Old Scaggsville Road in North Laurel after school.

Both were charged as juveniles with first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, said police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn. Police did not release the suspects' names because they are minors.

About 2:45 p.m. Friday, CaChino Nathaniel Lewis was heading home from school when he was assaulted; both assailants were known to Lewis, and at least one of them was armed with a knife, Llewellyn said.

Lewis was taken by ambulance to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was treated for a cut over the left eye and a broken jaw and nose, police said. He was later released.
