NCAA approves field of 16 for '03

Making the Division I men's lacrosse tournament will be easier next year. The NCAA's board of directors approved an expansion to a 16-team field beginning in 2003.

The composition of next year's field figures to include seven conference champions and nine at-large selections. With automatic berths being given to any qualified conference, only half of this year's 12-team field will be at-large invitations.

"It's just a shame this couldn't be implemented for this season," Towson coach Tony Seaman said. "There are going to be four or five really good teams left out that should be in the tournament. This year, you've got the possibility of four teams being in there who wouldn't even be considered without the automatic qualifier."
