Royals update

With manager Tony Muser seemingly on the hot seat, the Royals cooled those talks somewhat by winning two of three games this week against the struggling Detroit Tigers. Byrd posted a complete-game shutout in Monday's victory, making him the first Kansas City pitcher to win his first four decisions since Bret Saberhagen started 6-0 in 1987. Byrd was an All-Star with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1999 but went 2-9 in 2000 and was traded to the Royals last season for reliever Jose Santiago. While Byrd has been a pleasant surprise this season, the Royals are 0-4 in Reichert's four starts. Mike Sweeney has justified that five-year contract extension he signed, batting .338. But Chuck Knoblauch continues to struggle, batting .185 with a .254 on-base percentage. Last year, the Orioles won five of seven against Kansas City.
