Evans' arm, bat have a smashing impact for Kutztown

April 24, 2002|By Bill Free | Bill Free,SUN STAFF

They love softball at Kutztown University.

And they continue to be excited about the amazing pitching and hitting skills of lanky Kellie Evans (North County), who is on her way to career records at the school.

The junior pitcher/first baseman is not only the ace of the pitching staff, but she leads the team in six hitting categories.

In short, the 5-foot-11 Evans has taken the Kutztown, Pa., community by storm with her bat and right arm. She is Miss Everything for the Division II team (26-13), which is headed toward the regional playoffs in a bid to make the NCAA softball tournament.

Check out these stats:

At the plate, Evans leads the team in batting average (.484), home runs (11), RBIs (41), slugging percentage (.844), doubles (nine) and on-base average (.519).

On the mound, the former All-Metro first-team choice has a 15-5 record, 1.84 ERA, 16 complete games in 17 starts, 77 strikeouts and 50 walks in 137 innings. Opposing teams are hitting .218 off her.

Evans has been chosen the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Player of the Week twice and Co-Player of the Week once.

What does she have to say about these dizzying accomplishments?

"There's a lot of pressure on me every game to drive in runs," she said. "I try not to worry about it."

Evans said Kutztown puts a major emphasis on softball - "We practice every day all year-round" - but, she added, "I'm coming home this summer to do an internship in speech communications."

McGinnis on a tear

Junior goalkeeper Tim McGinnis (Loyola) has been on a tear most of the season for the Gettysburg lacrosse team (12-1), which has climbed to the No. 1 ranking in Division III.

McGinnis has a 5.49 goals-against average and a .681 save percentage for the Bullets, who have won four straight Centennial Conference titles, been to 11 of the past 12 NCAA tournaments and reached the Division III national title game last season.

McGinnis and the Bullets will play for another Division III tournament berth this weekend in the Centennial Conference tournament at Gettysburg.

Et cetera

Freshman outfielder Shawn Warner (Perry Hall) is hitting .292 with four home runs and 31 RBIs for Division II Mount Olive (N.C.) College. Mount Olive (28-22) is a member of the Carolinas/Virginia Conference.
