Roderick F. Swain, 64, diesel mechanic

Roderick F. Swain, a retired diesel mechanic and NASCAR fan, died of cancer Friday at his home in Hurlock. He was 64.

Born in North Carolina and raised in Baltimore, Mr. Swain attended city public schools. He served in the Air Force in the 1950s.

The former Preston resident was working for Clifton Trailer Inc. in Delaware when he retired on a medical disability in 1993.

Mr. Swain enjoyed attending auto races, and he collected and displayed in his home memorabilia associated with the sport.

Services were held Monday at the veterans cemetery in Beulah, Dorchester County.

Mr. Swain, whose first marriage ended in divorce, is survived by his wife of seven years, the former Vicki Shanes; a son, Brandon Swain of Hurlock; six daughters, Brittany Swain of Hurlock, Kim Howard of Virginia Beach, Va., Vicki Sharpe of Interlachen, Fla., Christina Spaughy of Connellsville, Pa., and Reenie Cramer and Sheri Ralph, both of Harrington, Del.; a sister, Shirley Dunsmore of Baltimore; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
