April 23, 2002

Susanna E. Carney, a retired department store supervisor and longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church in Guilford, died Friday of pancreatic cancer at Presbyterian Home of Maryland in Towson. She was 90 and a former resident of the Thirty-Nine Hundred Apartments in Guilford.

A Baltimore native, Susanna Ellinger was raised here and in Forest Hills, N.Y., where she graduated from high school. After returning to Baltimore, she graduated in 1930 from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

From 1953 to 1968, she was a customer service representative for the Hutzler's department store downtown.

She had been the oldest living parishioner of Second Presbyterian Church, having joined in 1927 when the church at St. Paul Street and Stratford Place was under construction. A memorial service will be held there at 2 p.m. Saturday.

FOR THE RECORD - An obituary in yesterday's editions of The Sun had an incorrect time for a memorial service for Susanna E. Carney. It will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church, St. Paul Street and Stratford Place, Guilford. The Sun regrets the error.

Mrs. Carney enjoyed attending the opera and symphony, and had been president of the Baltimore Opera Guild. She was also a subscriber for many years to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. She had been a member of the Baltimore Country Club and the Woman's Club of Roland Park.

In 1934, she married Herman D. Piel Sr., former owner of H.L. Piel Co., a Baltimore food brokerage, who died in 1962. In 1968, she married James N. Carey, an Amoco Oil Co. executive who died in 1970.

Mrs. Carney's survivors include a son, H. Davis Piel Jr. of Timonium; two daughters, Gretchen White of Orlando, Fla., and Jocelyn Dye of Towson; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a cousin with whom she was close, Patricia Connolly of Lynchburg, Va.
