Brooklyn church schedules dinner for mothers, daughters

Brooklyn United Methodist Church will hold a mother-daughter dinner May 11 at the church, Fourth Street at Pontiac Avenue, Brooklyn.

Men from the congregation will cook the dinner and serve it to the women. Joan Randall will give a talk, "The Spiritual Gifts of Women." The event will include musical entertainment and gifts for mothers.

Doors open at 4 p.m., and the dinner is at 5 p.m. Cost is $5.

Church choir: The Adult Choir of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church will perform at 8 o'clock tonight at the church, 611 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park. The free performance will include Vaughan Williams' "Old Hundredth Psalm Tune" and Mozart's "Laudate Dominum." 410-647-2550.

Flea market: The Ladies of the Knights of Columbus Monsignor Raymond P. Kelly Council 10966 of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Roman Catholic Church will hold a flea market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow in the church hall, 8513 St. Jane Drive. One table costs $10, and two cost $15. 410-255-2619.

Spaghetti dinner: St. John Lutheran Church, 226 Washburn Ave. (at Third Street) in Brooklyn, will hold a spaghetti dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow. The cost is $7; $3 for children 12 and younger. Proceeds will benefit St. John's Christian Day School. 410-355-7295.

Islam seminar: Jenkins Memorial Church will offer a seminar on Islam presented by the Rev. Anees Zaka from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow at the church, 133 Riviera Drive. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. Zaka, born in Egypt, is founder and director of Church Without Walls, which began as a ministry to Muslims in the United States several years ago.

Independence celebration: The United Jewish Council of Anne Arundel County is sponsoring a Celebration of Israeli Independence Day for children Sunday at the Aleph Bet Jewish Day School/Kneseth Israel Congregation's Alan J. Reiter Auditorium, 1125 Spa Road in Annapolis. Doors open for arts, crafts and face-painting at 1:30 p.m. A puppet show will begin at 2:30 p.m. The cost is $7 advance, $10 at door. 410-990-9836.

Evangelist: Evangelist Joel Hitchcock will speak at Chesapeake Christian Center, 7975 Tick Neck Road in Pasadena, at 8:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday. Hitchcock began preaching in South Africa at the age of 12. He is an ordained minister in Delaware. 410-255-3168.

Holocaust survivor: St. Andrew the Fisherman Episcopal Church will hold a Yom HaShoah, or commemoration of the Holocaust, at 2 p.m. May 5 at the church, 1183 Carr's Wharf Road, Edgewater. St. Andrew has invited Holocaust survivor Leo Bretholz to speak and answer questions. Bretholz is author of Leap into Darkness: Seven Years on the Run in Wartime Europe. 410-798-1533.
