Although the Famous Dave's restaurant chain began in Minnesota, the restaurant offers plenty of Southern-style fare.

At the Columbia location, the most popular dishes are spareribs, Texas brisket and Georgia chopped pork, says general manager Scott Lepson.

The restaurant, which opened in July 2000, offers ribs, chicken, steak and sandwiches in a casual atmosphere meant to mimic a North Woods cabin.

The walls are adorned with posters and pictures of fishing camps and vintage posters of seeds. Although the space is large, it is divided into smaller areas, and the wooden booths are cozy. On the tables are squeeze bottles with several varieties of barbecue sauce and a roll of paper towels.

Although the restaurant was bustling during a recent weekday lunch hour, service was fast and friendly.

Famous Dave's in Columbia is part of a chain that opened in Minneapolis in 1995. The restaurants can be found in Annapolis, Frederick and Laurel, and one is to open in Montgomery County this summer, Lepson said.

The restaurant's Southern-flavored menu includes sweet tea, barbecued pulled chicken and pecan pie. Side dishes include honey-buttered corn muffins, potato salad, coleslaw, fries, baked potatoes, corn on the cob and Famous North Woods Beans, which are served in a spicy sauce.

Also at Famous Dave's are hamburgers, steak, soups and salads, as well as Dave's Famous Feasts, combinations that serve from two to five diners. The All-American BBQ Feast, for example, includes St. Louis spare ribs, a whole chicken, a half-pound of beef brisket or chopped pork or double-smoked ham, coleslaw, fries, beans, four corn muffins and four ears of corn, all for $48.99. The same meal is offered with a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne for $159.99.

Beer, mixed drinks and wines are available, as well as Trader Dave's North Woods Coffee, spiked with Godiva liqueur and Chambord, and topped with whipped cream and maple syrup.

For younger folks, the children's menu includes chicken strips, barbecued chicken and burgers. Kids' meals are served with a soda, fries and cookies.

Early-bird specials are served from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sunday and include $5.49 sandwich specials; $4.99 soup, salad and potato specials; and $7.49 combo platters.

"We actually get a great cross-section of the population," Lepson said. "We get families all the way up to older folks."

Famous Dave's does a big catering business, Lepson said, serving birthday parties, offices, graduations and Fourth of July picnics. "Sometimes it's difficult for offices to come to us, so we just go to them," Lepson said.
