April 16, 2002

Doris Hauswald Moran, former office manager for Hauswald's Bakery, died Saturday of a brain hemorrhage at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. She was 78, and had been a resident of Heartlands Senior Living Village in Ellicott City since 1999.

Born Doris Hauswald in Baltimore and raised in Catonsville, where she graduated from high school, she studied music at the Peabody Conservatory.

She began working as a teen-ager, icing and boxing cakes in the Baltimore bakery her maternal grandmother had founded in 1915. She was the bakery's office manager for many years, until its sale in the mid-1980s to Schmidt's Bakery.

In 1949, she married Baltimore businessman Robert Moran Sr. He died in 1968.

A longtime Catonsville resident, Mrs. Moran was interested in amateur theatricals and performed with the Curtain Callers. She lived part of the year at a second home in Sarasota, Fla.

Mrs. Moran donated her body to the Maryland Anatomy Board. No services were planned.

She is survived by a son, Robert Moran Jr. of Annapolis; a daughter, Barbara Summerson of Ellicott City; two sisters, Ruth Weston of Marriottsville and Norma Chell of Annapolis; and two grandchildren.
