WINE OF THE WEEK

April 10, 2002|By Michael Dresser

1999 Castello Banfi Centine ($11). This modestly priced Tuscan red wine combines sangiovese, the classic grape of Chianti, with the classic Bordeaux varietals merlot and cabernet sauvignon. This medium-bodied wine is not a marvel of complexity, but it offers well-rounded fruit and appealing black cherry, blackberry, vanilla and herb flavors. With its lively acidity, it is particularly well-suited for serving with grilled red meat or chicken. For a step up in concentration and intensity, consider Banfi's fine 1999 Rosso de Montalcino at $22.
