County Council gets B+ from Sierra Club on environment

The Sierra Club of Anne Arundel County has given the County Council a B+ in its first report card on the panel's record on environmental issues.

To determine a grade for each council member, the Sierra Club tracked votes for the first two years of the Council's four-year term, said Sierra Club board member Earl Bradley. The group looked at council members' votes on issues including recycling facilities, the Parole Growth Management Area boundaries and the Crofton Small Area plan.

The individual grades for council members were: Pamela G. Beidle, C+; Daniel E. Klosterman Jr., B-; Shirley Murphy, B; Bill D. Burlison, C; Cathleen M. Vitale, A; Barbara D. Samorajczyk, A+; and John J. Klocko III, B+.

Fire Department to hold memorial service tonight

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department's annual memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Road.

The service is held each year on the anniversary of the death of John W. Balcer, the first Arundel career firefighter to die in the line of duty. Balcer was killed April 9, 1970, when the fire engine he was riding overturned while en route to a fire.

A bell will be rung for each of the 18 county firefighters who have died in the line of duty. The service also will recognize the 343 firefighters who died in New York responding to the terrorist attacks Sept. 11.
