April 09, 2002

Betty Jane Basel, a former Fells Point tavern owner, died Friday of a heart attack at her home in the historic neighborhood. She was 67.

For about 15 years, until retiring in 1995, she owned Frances' Pub in the 2000 block of Fleet St., a bar founded by her mother. She sponsored Frances' Mug Club, a social organization whose members collected food for Thanksgiving and Christmas distribution to the needy.

Born Betty Jane Rhude in Baltimore, she was raised on Scott Street and attended public schools.

She led a Girl Scout troop at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Fullerton.

Her 1953 marriage to Jack J. Basel ended in divorce.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lemko House, 603 S. Ann St., Fells Point.

She is survived by three daughters, M. Catherine Coble and Barbara E. Goff, both of Severna Park, and Johanna L. Saltysiak of Hampstead; and three grandchildren. Another daughter, Gloria J. Benfield, died in 1999.
