A 3-year-old East Baltimore boy died yesterday afternoon, about an hour after he was run over by a sport utility vehicle near his home, city police said.

Leon Coleman Jr. was standing with several other children near his home in the 1000 block of New Hope Circle, in the Pleasant View Gardens townhouses near Orleans Street, about 3:20 p.m. when the driver of a 1998 Ford Expedition who had been visiting friends there stopped to talk to the group, police said.

When the SUV began to move away from the children, police said, Leon ran toward the vehicle and was run over.

Police said the driver, Dante Barksdale, 28, of the 800 block of Dartmouth Road, got out of his vehicle, picked up the child and, with the victim's mother, drove to Johns Hopkins Hospital. Leon died there shortly before 4:30 p.m., said Sgt. Dean Brightbill of the traffic investigation section.

Brightbill said the accident remained under investigation, but that a preliminary review indicated pedestrian error as the cause.
