THE ANNE Arundel County Department of Health, Adolescent and Family Services and Brooklyn Park Middle School will sponsor a workshop, "Understanding Teen Substance Abuse," from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and April 17 in the school's media center.

Refreshments will be served, and registration is required.

The school is at 415 Andover Road. Information: Becky Ruppert, 410-222-6725.

Chicken dinner

The Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church Youth Group is offering a reason not to cook dinner Saturday night.

Instead of toiling in front of a hot stove, you may stop by the church between 4 and 7 p.m. for the group's chicken dinner. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children. Children ages 5 and younger will be admitted free.

The menu consists of chicken, potatoes, vegetables, drinks, dessert and salad. Carry-out will be available. The church is at 110 Townsend Ave. Information: 410-789-3688.

Brooklyn Heights

Having adequate streetlights can help improve a community.

Streetlights let children spend more time doing things like skateboarding or shooting baskets after dinner. More important, bright lights help to keep away any "troublemakers."

Jim Scroll, a traffic engineer for the county, will address this month's meeting of the Brooklyn Heights Improvement Association. Anyone with question or concerns about the lighting on their street may attend.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Brooklyn Park Library, 1 E. 11th Ave. Information: 410-636-9611.

A Family Place

The popular five-week program "A Family Place" will return to the Brooklyn branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, 300 E. Patapsco Ave., this month. Saturdays at 2 p.m., parents and caregivers of children ages 1 to 3 may meet to learn about child development, nutrition and behavior from representatives of area community services agencies.

The program also allows participants to get to know their neighbors and discuss concerns.

Information: 410-396-1120.

New York

A few seats remain for the Brooklyn Park High School Alumni Association's spring bus trip to New York on May 4.

The bus will leave from Bingo World, 10th Avenue and Belle Grove Road, at 6:30 a.m. Tickets are $30 for alumni association members and $35 for nonmembers.

Information: 410-636-3269 or 410-789-7214.
