City schools police officer fatally shoots man

A Baltimore School Police officer fatally shot an unidentified man early yesterday at Leith Walk Elementary School, 1235 Sherwood Road, city police said.

City police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Daniels said the officer was patrolling outside at 1 a.m. when he encountered two men in back of the building.

School officials identified the officer as Marlon Lynch, who has been on the school force for two years. Lynch began a "dialogue" with the two men, Daniels said, which led to a physical struggle. Lynch tried to draw his service weapon, and it discharged during the struggle, Daniels said.

One man was shot and rushed to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:47 p.m. The other man escaped.

School spokeswoman Vanessa C. Pyatt said Lynch has been placed on administrative leave.
