After sweating out a one-goal victory over Mount St. Mary's last year, the Towson women's lacrosse team wanted to send a message to the Mountaineers yesterday, and the Tigers wasted no time in doing so.

Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Howell scored just eight seconds into the game as Towson rolled to an easy 18-7 victory over the Mountaineers in a nonconference game at Minnegan Stadium, played at times during a driving rainstorm.

Coached by former Maryland All-American Courtney Martinez-Connor, the Mountaineers (6-5) were overmatched from the outset against a Tigers team that already has big wins over Delaware and William & Mary.

"I am very happy with the win," said Towson coach Linda Ohrin, whose team beat Mount 11-10 last year. "We did things well we've been working on all season. I think we are doing a lot of smart things on the attacking end and that was a sore spot early in the season."

Following Howell's first goal, the start of a four-goal, three-assist afternoon for the sophomore from Glenelg, the Tigers (6-4) got goals from freshman Martha Dwyer and senior Kat Brady (Archbishop Spalding) to take a 3-0 lead.

The Mountaineers, who had 50 combined goals in wins over Binghamton and St. Francis (Pa.), did not register their first shot on goal until nearly seven minutes into the game.

However, they crept within 4-2 when sophomore Erin Gargan (Mount de Sales) and junior Kelly Moran (St. Mary's) scored in between a goal by Towson sophomore Caitlin Marshall (Centennial).

But following Moran's goal, the Tigers scored nine straight goals, seven with assists, in an approximately eight-minute span to take a 13-2 lead and the rout was on.

"Our goal was to have a lot of assisted goals today," said Brady, who had three goals and an assist. "We met that. We were seeing the open girl really well today."

Tigers sophomore Abigail Giancola had two goals and an assist, and freshman Erin Cayea had a goal and three assists.
