Train derailment shuts down freight traffic

March 24, 2002

Rail officials were trying to determine what caused a freight train to derail early yesterday morning, shutting down local freight traffic until this afternoon at the earliest.

The CSX train was en route from Cumberland to Philadelphia when nine refrigerated cars jumped the track near Washington Boulevard and Patapsco Avenue about 4:50 a.m. The cars, filled with canned goods and other food, blocked a second freight track.

No one was injured and no hazardous material was involved, according to CSX spokeswoman Jennifer Fry. CSX planned to reopen one track by noon today and the second track by 6 p.m.
