A gunfight in a West Baltimore housing project yesterday afternoon left one person dead and two wounded, and littered a courtyard with more than 20 shell casings.

Police said the shooting erupted about 3:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of Bakbury Court in the Gilmor Homes public housing complex as men standing in a courtyard and someone on a second-floor landing exchanged gunfire, police said.

Three males, ranging in age from 14 to early 20s, were hit, police said. Two were found near the shooting scene and another managed to run a block before collapsing in the 1500 block of Bruce St., police said.

Two were taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where one died, and a third was taken to Sinai Hospital, police said. The survivors did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, police said.

The courtyard was covered with shell casings from at least three different types of handguns, police said - so many that investigators ran out of the plastic evidence cards used to mark them, and substituted notebooks and pieces of paper.

Residents said the shots sounded like a quick series of loud firecrackers, and they were not surprised at the violence. "It's not that unusual," said one of them, Trina Elliott, 26. "I'm living in a dangerous place."

The killing raised the city's homicide death toll this year to 48.
