Head Start program is taking applications for 2002-2003

The Community Action Council Head Start of Howard County is accepting applications for the 2002-2003 program year. Head Start is a free, federally funded child development program for families who meet income guidelines.

Applications will be accepted for children born in 1998 and 1999 who will be 3 years old before Dec. 31. Children with a documented disability are encouraged to apply, regardless of the family's income.

Full-day child-care services also are offered. Limited transportation is provided.

School board schedules closed session tomorrow

The Howard County Board of Education will meet in closed session at 2 p.m. tomorrow, before the afternoon session of the regular board meeting, which begins at 4 p.m.

The board will meet at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

During the evening session of the board meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m., the panel will hold a public work session and approve the Pointers Run Elementary boundary line adjustments for the 2002-2003 school year.

Gifted-talented testing to be administered May 4

The Howard County public school system will hold gifted-and-talented testing for nonpublic school pupils in grades 5 through 7 who plan to enter Howard County middle schools in August. Testing will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. May 4 at River Hill High School, 12101 Route 108, Clarksville.

Registration materials are available at middle school guidance offices, or the Gifted and Talented Program office: 410-313- 6800.

The registration deadline is April 26.

Restaurant to hold event to benefit scholarship fund

This week's Noche Latina at La Palapa Grill & Cantina in historic Ellicott City will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow and will benefit the Columbia-based Conexiones Inc. Scholarship Fund for Latino high school seniors in Howard County.

The event, which will include Latin music and dancing, will be at La Palapa restaurant, 8307 Main St.

Those who attend must be at least 18, with identification. Admission is $5.
