Foreign language classes to be offered by center and AACC

The South County Senior Center and Anne Arundel Community College are offering two 10-week language classes beginning next month. Classes in French are scheduled for 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Mondays. Spanish classes are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

The classes will teach students the basic vocabulary and grammar needed for such situations as making reservations, asking for directions and requesting medical help.

Pascal Center to hold health fair March 27

A health fair sponsored by Pascal Senior Center will be held from 9 a.m. to noon March 27 at the center, 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie.

Representatives from North Arundel Hospital will offer free pulmonary, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings. The fair will also include exhibits and information from the departments of Health and Aging and, at 10 a.m., a presentation on colorectal cancer prevention.

Internet help: O'Malley Senior Center, 1275 Odenton Road, will sponsor a program about finding reliable health information on the Internet from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. today. The presentation is designed for novice Internet users. Information: 410-222-6227.

Driving course: AARP will sponsor a 55 Alive driving course from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow and Friday. Topics to be covered include effects of aging and medication on driving, basic driving rules, license renewals and accident prevention. Information: 410- 222-1927.

Flea market: South County Senior Center in Edgewater will hold its annual flea market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Donations of pots and pans, curtains, dishes, toys and small furniture items will be accepted (no clothes are needed). Bull, oyster roast: Pasadena Senior Center will hold a bull and oyster roast from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the VFW hall on Bayside Beach Road. Tickets are $25. All proceeds will benefit the center. Information: 410-222-0030.

Open house: "The Genial Genealogist" will hold a reception from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at O'Malley Senior Center, 127 Odenton Road. The event is open to those interested in genealogy. Information: 410-222-6227.

Financial planning: A law and financial planning day for seniors and their families is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday in Room 101 of the Florestano Building at Anne Arundel Community College. The event will include workshops on Medicaid eligibility, wills and trusts, long-term care insurance, financial recordkeeping and grandparents raising grandchildren. Information: 410-777- 2055.

War and terrorism: O'Malley Senior Center will offer a course, "War and Terrorism," this spring through Anne Arundel Community College. Mark Croatti, a political science instructor affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University and Anne Arundel Community College, will teach the 10-week course. Topics will include the funding of and efforts to combat terrorism. Seniors may register for the class between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. through Friday at the center, 1275 Odenton Road, Odenton. Classes: Pasadena Senior Center's spring classes begin the first week of April. Classes include "Hands Healing Techniques," "Baltimore City History," "History of England," "The War on Terrorism," "Ceramics," "Graphics," "Modern Square Dance," "Intermediate Computer II," "So You Want to Be an Actor" and "Acrylics and Multimedia Painting." Senior trips: South County Senior Center in Edgewater has announced trips scheduled for this year: Sight and Sound Theatre for Daniel - a Dream, a Den and Deliverer today in Lancaster, Pa.; the Palace of Gold ("America's Taj Mahal") in Wheeling, W.Va., April 16 to 18; and Winterthur Museum and Gardens and Wyeth House and Studio in Delaware on May 3. Music, dance: South County Senior Center in Edgewater offers music and dance classes. The 10-week classes, which began last month, include: "Regular Line Dance" (knowledge of basic dance steps and terminology required), 11 a.m. to noon Mondays; "Chorus," 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays; "Tap Dance," 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays; "Beginners Line Dance," 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays; and "Music Appreciation," 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays. Caregivers conference: "Caregiving: Meeting the Challenges," the 10th annual caregivers conference sponsored by the county Department of Aging, the Central Maryland chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and Anne Arundel Community College, will be held May 10 at the college. The goal of the conference is to offer support to family caregivers and present information to professional caregivers. The cost is $15, which includes meals and supplies.
