Man kills self after standoff, police say

March 19, 2002|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A 60-year-old Westminster man fatally shot himself yesterday evening after a dispute with his wife and a five-hour standoff with troopers who had surrounded the couple's home, state police said.

Nearby homes were evacuated and school buses were detoured from the site in the 2100 block of Littlestown Pike, where troopers finally fired tear gas into the ranch-style home and entered to find Edwin K. Webb dead on a bedroom floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

The man's wife, Veronica T. Webb, 41, had fled hours before after being assaulted by her husband and was being treated at Carroll County General Hospital, said Lt. Bud Frank, a state police spokesman.
