County employees to be honored with community awards

The Howard County Chamber of Commerce will honor local public servants at its 13th Community Awards Night at 6 p.m. April 24 at Turf Valley Resort & Conference Center in Ellicott City. People with outstanding achievements in law enforcement, telecommunications, fire and rescue services, education and county government will be recognized.

Tickets are $40, and are available from the chamber office. Tickets also can be purchased and donated to allow families of the honorees to attend the event at no cost.

Agribusiness breakfast to feature waterfowl talk

The bimonthly Howard County Agri-Business Breakfast will feature a talk by Pam Garrettson of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, "Determining Hunting Seasons and Bag Limits for Waterfowl." The breakfast will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. March 21 at the Howard County Fairgrounds.

Registration is requested by tomorrow. The cost is $6.

Economic agency to present seminar about franchises

The Howard County Economic Development Authority's Business Resource Center will offer "Is Franchising for You?" from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. March 26 at the Center for Business & Technology Development, 9250 Bendix Road North, Columbia.

The class will address how franchising works, the fundamentals of buying a new or existing franchise, how to select the right industry and other topics.

The cost is $25. Registration is required.

Extension service to offer personal finance workshop

The University of Maryland's Cooperative Extension will offer a four-session workshop, "Prescription for Financial Wellne$$," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning April 3 at the Maryland Cooperative Extension office, 3525-L Ellicott Mills Drive, Ellicott City.

The workshop will address communication about finances between family members; determining financial goals and finding ways to accomplish them; credit use; saving and investments; and retirement and estate planning.

The cost is $20, including materials and a workbook. Registration is required by March 29.

Chamber luncheon: The Howard County Chamber of Commerce will hold a general membership luncheon Thursday at the Sheraton Columbia Hotel, 10207 Wincopin Circle, Columbia. William R. Business skills training: Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides entrepreneurial training, is recruiting candidates for its next business skills training course. Candidates will be screened from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 6. The application deadline is March 29. The group offers a three-month training course, as well as post-training business consultation, mentoring, financing strategies, community networking assistance, Internet training, government procurement assistance and resource sharing. Scholarships offered: The Business Women's Network of Howard County is accepting applications for two scholarships to be awarded in June, one of them to a high school senior.
