Woman found dead near railroad tracks

A woman believed to be between 35 and 40 years old was found yesterday fatally stabbed in the stomach near railroad tracks in the 400 block of S. Stricker St., police said.

The woman, who was found by B&O Railroad workers at 8:43 a.m., had no identification, police said.

Stream's green hue believed to be prank

In what authorities said appeared to be a St. Patrick's Day prank, a stream connected to Dead Run in West Baltimore's Leakin Park turned bright green yesterday morning and fluoresced for about a mile.

John Verrico, a spokesman for the Maryland Department of Environment, said two investigators sent to the scene found no indication the coloring will have an environmental impact. Most likely, Verrico said, the stream was colored with a green "sea marker" dye, the same kind the department uses to study water flow and which is used to turn the Chicago River green on St. Patrick's Day.

Still, Verrico said, the coloring posed a problem. "It caused a whole bunch of folks to scurry out," he said. "We had two units dealing with the situation." He said those responsible for the coloring could face environmental pollution penalties and criminal charges.
