The game

Geronimo Gil, Jerry Hairston, Chris Singleton, Jeff Conine and Tony Batista each had two hits, and the Orioles (10-5-1) won their eighth consecutive game. They haven't lost since March 6.The Mets made three errors last night.

The arms

Sean Douglass went four innings, with a Mike Piazza homer the only run off him. He retired nine of the next 10 and left with a 2-1 lead. The first four Mets scalded the ball, but John Valentin lined into a double play and Mo Vaughn was thrown out at second base by right fielder Jay Gibbons. John Bale breezed through the fifth but allowed three hits, including a two-run homer to Valentin. Jorge Julio stranded two in the ninth.

The bats

A single by Gil and run-scoring doubles by Hairston and Singleton erased New York's 1-0 lead in the third. Gil tacked on a run with a fourth-inning single, and Conine drove in two more in the fifth.

Injury update

David Segui strained his right Achilles' tendon and left the game after two innings and is day-to-day. Melvin Mora (hand, calf) made his first start last night, replacing shortstop Mike Bordick.
