Orioles 5, Marlins 1

March 13, 2002

The game

Scott Erickson turned in his most encouraging performance of the spring and the Orioles used home runs by Mike Bordick and Tony Batista to extend their winning streak to five games. Erickson, 19 months removed from Tommy John surgery, was the first Orioles pitcher of the spring to work six innings.

The arms

Rodrigo Lopez relieved Erickson and earned the save with three hitless innings. Lopez has now pitched six innings this spring without giving up a run, living up to the praise he earned while going 5-0 for Mexico during the Caribbean Series. Lopez, who signed with the Orioles as a minor-league free agent, is making a serious bid to make the Opening Day roster.

The bats

Bordick's home run led off the game against Marlins starter A.J. Burnett. David Segui had two singles and hit the ball sharply in all three of his at-bats. Jose Leon broke open a 2-1 game with a two-run double to deep center field in the seventh inning. Leon, another Opening Day long shot, raised his spring average to .400 (6-for-15).

Injury update

Top outfield prospect Luis Matos broke the hamate bone in his left hand Saturday and will miss at least six weeks. That's the same injury that ended outfielder Jay Gibbons' season last year. Matos missed most of last season after needing surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder.

The number

7 - Runs the Orioles have given up in their past six games.

The quote

"Coming in, we had good scouting reports [on Lopez], but you always want to see it for yourself." - manager Mike Hargrove
