March 13, 2002

The student: Jessica Palmire, 17

School: Howard High

Special achievement: Last summer, Jessica was chosen as Best All Around Cheerleader at the Eastern Cheerleaders Association summer camp at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. On Friday, she will compete against 11 other cheerleaders in the ECA Educational Scholarship Awards competition in Williamsburg, Va. Winners receive scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $500.

Why she enjoys cheerleading: "I enjoy the competition," Jessica said. "I participate in around 25 competitions each year."

Other interests: In addition to leading cheers for Howard High, Jessica is a member of Maryland All-Star Twisters, a competitive cheerleading squad. "I don't have a lot of time because I do cheerleading seven times a week and take gymnastics three times per week," she said. "But when I have time, I like hanging out with my friends."

Her plans: Jessica wants to continue cheerleading through college while pursuing a major in business administration.
